Star Gazing

November 17th, 2006

If you have clear skies over the next few nights, and not too much light pollution, you may be able to see some shooting stars. We are currently passing through the dust trail of the Temple-Tattle comet , which produces the annual Leonid meteor shower. There may be a strong shower this year, as we are passing through a dense streak of debris, and if you are very lucky, you may be able to see some earthgrazers and fireballs , meteors skimming the atmosphere and larger meteors disintegrating in a spectacular display. Best viewing times depend on your location, though the best place to see the Leonids is Europe and the east coast of North America. If you should miss the Leonids this year there are many meteor showers throughout the year, with the Geminid meteor shower the next major shower around December 13th.
