Wild Cards - Guide

Printing

The guide needs to be printed double sided, and cut along lines marked on pages. The print is small in order to get as much information into a portable guide as possible. The test sheet should also be used to test printer settings. In the .pdf print settings make sure the size is 'Actual Size' and not 'Fit to Paper'. It is also recommended to test different print quality settings. The test page can be printed on paper with a fast draft setting to test paper alignment in the printer, but the main print run should be done on thin white card, e.g. 160g. The A4 sheets are in landscape orientation with four cards to a sheet. With most standard ink jet printers the sheet can be fed back in the way it emerged for double-sided printing. Each sheet is labeled 'a' for the front, and 'b' for the back (with the exception of the DIY template, which is labeled '1' for the front and '2' for the back), and they come as individual .pdf files to aid careful printing.

Cutting and Assembling

The cards are edged with a faint line on the front to aid cutting, and also have a punching guide in one corner for binding. When using a two-hole punch, test position on some scrap paper, and mark on the punch with tape or a cardboard template jammed into the unused punch slot. Please note that some of the pages have a central cutting line, whilst others have a space down the centre with two resulting cuts.

Corners may be rounded for a neat finish. This can be done with a small craft corner punch, or using a phone or credit card as a template. A cardboard template also aid cutting out the cards. The front and back key cards, which act as covers, are best laminated.
When using a trimmer to cut the cards, mark two opposite edges, the other sides of the cards will have trim marks at the edge after the first waste strips are removed.

The set comes in three sections; general information, which includes glossaries and notes, the directory - some common plants featured in detail, and the index with about 360 plants with botanical names in alphabetical order, as well as an English-Latin converter. Most pages in the information section have a colour coded edge to aid a quick search, and may be arranged to suit individual use, although the plant part cards are best arranged in the order in which they appear on the key card. The directory and index sections are in alphabetical order. This arrangement eliminates the need for page numbering and allows the customization and expansion of the set. The key for the front of the directory cards should be at the very front of the pack, as it also acts as a section index, and has a ruler edge for measuring small items. The key card for the back of the directory cards should be placed at the end of the pack so that the key can be used in the same orientation as the back of the directory cards.
The cards can be used either loose like index cards, or bound for safe transport. The binding can be done in a number of ways, e.g. a binder ring, carabiner, twine, or screw post. They can be stored in an index card box or pocket for 3x5 inch cards. The download includes blank templates for adding to the directory section.

Notes on Use

The calendar for availability is a rough guide, as timing can vary according to location, and climatic variability. In a sheltered spot in a mild year you may find some plants early, whilst on an exposed site at slightly higher altitude plants may flower and fruit later, but also die down earlier in the autumn. If a foraging territory takes in a few miles, this can extend the availability of plants.
